At Floor Coverings International West Metro Atlanta, we love to bring you creative insight and perspectives from some of web’s most influential bloggers. Our latest interview features popular mommy blogger Nikki of Mommy My Way. You can follow Nikki on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and Etsy.
Please tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a single mom to an almost two-year-old, very active boy named Zaylen. (I call him my twonado, because two is a wild roller coaster of an age!). We just relocated back to my hometown in Florida from Atlanta to be closer to our family. We love to be outdoors and travel and I try to get some baby-free time by going to yoga. I work full time outside of the home and also blog about my real motherhood moments over at Mommy My Way
What’s one type of flooring you use in your children’s room (and/or or kitchen) and why?
We are ALL about the hard floors over here, and I’m obsessed with our new home’s flooring situation. Not a single square foot of carpeting. With messy cats and kiddos, carpets are difficult to maintain and keep clean. Our entire house has beautiful tile in a smooth gray wood-look finish. We warm up the space with rugs that can be easily replaced or cleaned, but honestly, I prefer the bare floors. After all, why would I want to cover up these gorgeous floors?
Why did you decide to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?
I became a single mom while I was still pregnant. I started blogging as a way to journal and cope with the pain and betrayal I felt at the time. I soon realized that my blog was a safe place for other single moms to feel less alone; that my blog wasn’t simply a place for me to work through my emotions, but for others as well. Because I share all aspects of motherhood, not just single mom topics, my readers come from all walks of life and backgrounds. This is exactly why I love it and continue to do it. Some of my best friends today are mothers I’ve never met before and wouldn’t know if it weren’t for my online presence. The mommy community (outside of blogging) can be an intimidating space filled with judgment and hate, but the blogging community is incredibly supportive. The women I’ve met have helped me celebrate every moment in my and my son’s lives.
Where do you find most of your inspiration?
Everyday life honestly. I write about literally everything we do: buying a home, picking a daycare, breastfeeding, holiday celebrations, fitness, decor and more. I feel like there’s always someone out in the world who could benefit from seeing our unfiltered life. Whether it’s tips or a how to, or an emotional rant begging for advice, someone feels the same way or wants to do the same thing, so I share it.
Can you explain a recent project you’ve been working on?
One of my favorite projects right is the #myrealmotherhood chat I host on Instagram every month on the 25th. Oftentimes we see motherhood portrayed as perfectly staged photos with everyone smiling and the house spotless, but we all know this is not reality. Motherhood is messy, emotional and real, and guess what? That is totally ok. This hashtag is a place for moms to share their real life moments without judgment and a place to get to know other moms in the same boat. People can join the chat in a number of different ways: by posting a photo of their own using the hashtag #myrealmotherhood, by commenting their responses on my monthly photo, or even by browsing through the hashtag to comment on other moms’ photos. The My Real Motherhood project is so much more than a monthly chat though; it’s a place for everyday real life moments. I hope moms feel empowered to share their accomplishments and struggles on any platform whenever they need or want to, knowing they always have at least one person (me) to share that moment with them.
Here are some of my favorite photo submissions from the project:
