Marietta HardwoodAbout

Birch is a popular hardwood species in the greater Marietta, East Cobb, Powder Springs, and Smyrna areas because it adds a classic and elegant touch to any home. It’s a durable hardwood option with a subtle grain pattern. Birch creates beautiful patterns with colors ranging from creamy golden tones to dark browns and reds. This creates a floor with color variation from plank to plank and unique patterns depending on the tree that was used.

If you’d like a floor with less color variation, you can buy birch that is just harvested from the heartwood (dark red or brown tones) or just the sapwood (golden tones). This species also takes stains very well, so you can customize it to fit your personal design aesthetic.

Durability

There are three different types of birch to pick from, which all vary in durability:

  • Paper Birch: This is the softest option, ranking at 930 on the Janka hardness scale. It is great for rooms with lower volumes of foot traffic.
  • Yellow Birch: This is the most popular type of birch, and it comes in at 1260 on the scale.
  • Sweet Birch: This is the hardest of the three, coming in at 1470.

While all three types of birch are a beautiful option, yellow and sweet birch are going to hold up the best to everyday wear and tear. All three types can be sanded and refinished several times to get rid of dents and scratches.
